Keratin Hair Smoothing Treatments VS Traditional Hair Relaxers

Now a days a lot of women are considering to go natural, but don't necessarily want to take on the maintenance required for natural hair care. You still want to be able to style your hair in different ways without worrying about the frizz afterwards. So what is the solution? Many women resort to relaxers, and others who decide to go natural do Keratin Hair Smoothing Treatment. We are going to breakdown the two and pros and cons of each, you as the consumer can decide which is right for you. Both are available at Gladys New Image Beauty Salon.

Keratin Hair Treatments VS. Hair Relaxers

Keratin Hair Treatments:

Whats Keratin?
-It is also the key structural component of hair and nails.

Process
-A Stylist applies hair straightening product to the hair and then uses the heat of a flat iron to seal in the keratin protein in the hair. The process can take up to 90 minutes or longer, depending on your hair length.

Maintenance
-Wait to wash hair for 3-4 days after getting treatment
-After you get the keratin hair treatment, and after the "don't wash" waiting period, it is highly recommended to use sodium-sulfate-free shampoo to help maintain the treatment.

Results
-Treatment can last up 2½ months. (results vary depending on hair texture)

Pros and cons
Now if you usually style you hair straight, a keratin treatment can shorten you blow dry time by 40% to 60% (says, Henri Borday of New York's Mizv Salon). Even better forget about frizzy hair after treatment.

Keratin is more of a restorative treatment. It strengthens all hair types. The point is to make hair manageable  healthy and resilient. Keratin hair treatment works well on relaxed processed hair, highlighted, and colored hair.

After applying the Keratin hair treatment hair is blow dried straight and then flat ironed at high levels to seal it in. This process should be done by a license professional that is trained in the application of the Keratin hair treatment. If hair is not treated with maximum care while sealing the treatment breakage can be a problem.

Keratin Hair Treatments can be costly, stylist consider the length and thickness of the hair to how many ounces will be used in the application. But consider the nourishment the hair is receiving.

Salons should look out for Formaldehyde:Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas that presents a health hazard if workers are exposed. You can be exposed to formaldehyde if you breathe it into your lungs, if it gets into your eyes, or if it is contained in a product that gets onto your skin.

At Gladys New Image Beauty Salon we try out best to make sure not to carry any hair products that contain formaldehyde, with concerns for our clients and employees.

Hair Relaxers:

What is a Relaxer?
A relaxer is a type of lotion or cream generally used by people with curly-textured hair which makes hair less tangled and also easier to straighten by chemically "relaxing" the natural curls. The active agent is usually a strong alkali, although some formulations are based on ammonium thioglycolate instead.

Process
Hair is separated in sections, and hair relaxer is applied from the root up the hair shaft, up to where the new growth has ended. After the relaxer has straighten out the hair, hair is rinsed and washed with a neutralizer shampoo, and we recommend a deep conditioner treatment afterwards. To nourish the hair from the chemical process of the relaxer.

Maintenance
Retouches can be done after 6 weeks, depending how fast the hair grows you can go longer with out retouching the new hair growth. Don't apply relaxer before 6 weeks!!

Results
Hair is smooth and manageable. Your hair style will look more put together and will last longer between hair appointments, especially in short cuts.

Pros and Cons:
Enjoy a straight look, easier to comb and style. A relaxer will completely straighten the hair, but you can enjoy curly styles with out the frizz with curling irons and rollers. Relaxed hair is styled much faster, from it being much more manageable and easy to maneuver.

Although not as expensive as a Keratin Hair Treatment, the cost can add up. Depending the brand used and the coarseness/kinkiness of the hair prices may vary. Since a deep conditioner is recommended that should also be considered in the price.

The reason why conditioners are highly recommended is because a relaxer can cause the hair shaft to weaken and prone to breakage. Another thing to consider is usually when you do get relaxers, other chemical process are not recommended or can be risky. Drastic hair changes and highlights can cause major hair breakage if not done with maximum care.
